Urinary Disorders

Urine Sample Collection

Is it true that the genitals should be cleaned with soap and water before the collection of a urine sample for a routine test? I have also heard that the first few drops of urine should not be included in the sample for some reason. Is this correct?

Analysis of urine is for detection of infection, blood, protein, bacteria, fungus, crystals and sugar. If urine is collected for detection of infection then the best is to discard the first few drops of urine which contains urethral material. Also, if urine is to be sent for culture, it is best to clean the meatus before collecting the sample.
