Brown Spots in Mouth

10/17/2011

Question:

For past year I have had brown spots in my mouth on hard palette, and on inside of checks, get new ones, so far about 12 in various places in mouth ...... No Dr I`ve seen can give me a cause...other than possibly systmic. The spots do not hurt, look like dark freckles

Answer:

Well you may be correct in your assessment of what is occurring.
These “brown spots” may be freckles or ephelis and related to melanin pigmentation.

There are a number of other possible causes and as your primary care providers mentioned that may be related to systemic disorders such as Peutz-Jegher’s syndrome, McCune Albright syndrome (variant of fibrous dysplasia) or Addison’s disease.

Other possible explanations may be related to some medications, or excessive melanin activity (melanocytic nevi, or melanocanthoma although these lesions appear almost black in color and not brown).
