Does Synthroid help reduce arthritis pain?

03/12/1999

Question:

My 82 yr. old mother told me she had read in the Merck medical guide that taking a higher dose of synthroid will also help reduce pain associated w/arthritis. She is on 150 mg of Synthroid & says it really helped her. Is there truth to this? I've been having sciatica pain in lower back/hip area & am also on Synthroid but my dr. has been gradually reducing the dosage. I'm now down to 112 mg/day.

Answer:

Some patients with underactive thyroid disease develop a form of arthritis, which is similar to pseudogout, and which responds to thyroid replacement therapy. However this form of arthritis generally affects the peripheral joints, such as the knee, and not the back. It is, in fact, much more common for patients with thyroid disease to have a degenerative arthritis which often affects the back and hips. This form of arthritis would not respond to thyroid replacement. therapy.
